UPR of Rwanda

The UPR Working Group will hold its 37th session from 18 to 29 January 2021 in the Assembly Hall, Palais des Nations. The Council reviewed Hunman rights  rights records  Rwanda, Micronesia, Lebanon, Mauritania, Nauru, Nepal, Saint Lucia, Oman, Austria, Myanmar, Australia, Georgia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Sao Tome and Principe. The Review of Rwanda took place on 25th January 2021. The delegation of Rwanda comprosed of Honourable Monister of Justice and Attorney General ( Head of Delegation), Honourable  Professor Anasthase Shyaka, Minister of Local Government, Dr. Usta Kaitesi, Chief Executive Officer of Rwanda Govervanance Board. The three of them attended the Session remotely from Kigali. Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Rwanda, Mrs. Marie Chantal RWAKAYINA together with Ms. Providence UMURUNGI, Head of the international Justice and Judicial cooperation at the Ministry of Justice participated from Geneva. The Troika responsible for preparing the outcome report of Rwanda consisted of Bangladesh, Poland and Togo.

Nine delegations submitted advanced questions which was transmitted to Rwanda prior to the Review. During the Interactive dialogue, 99 delegations delivered statements commended Rwanda for its exceptional progress in promotion and protection of human rights since its last review in 2015. During the Review, Rwanda received 284 recommendations out of which 160 recommendations enjoyed the support of Rwanda, 75 recommendatioins were noted. The counyry undertook to take position of 49 recommendations that did not enjoy its support at later stage.

In his concluding remark, the Head of Rwanda Delegation, reaffirmed Rwanda,s commitment to the implimentation of the recommendations accepted and underlined a key component of Rwanda Human rights agenda for the next 5 years.
