Rwandan Community in Switzerland gather in Lausanne for Kwibuka32 Commemoration Vigil
On 11 April 2026, the Rwandan community in Switzerland and friends of Rwanda gathered in Lausanne for a commemorative vigil organized by Ibuka Suisse in collaboration with the Embassy, as part of the 32nd Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. The solemn gathering brought together members of the community for an evening dedicated to remembrance, solidarity and the reaffirmation of the collective commitment to “Never Again.”
In his address, Mr. César Murangira, President of IBUKA Mémoire et Justice Section Suisse, emphasized the importance of the duty of remembrance and the central role that survivor testimonies play in preserving memory and transmitting historical truth to future generations.
Representing the Embassy, Mr. Edmond Tubanambazi underscored the importance of preserving memory, transmitting the history of the Genocide against the Tutsi to younger generations, and rejecting all forms of hate speech, divisionism and genocide denial. He stressed that remembrance must remain a force for vigilance, social cohesion and prevention.
A key moment of the vigil was the moving testimonies delivered by Mr. Pacifique Rugambwa Nzanana and Mr. Michel Nshimiyimana, who shared the trials they endured during the genocide as well as their journeys of resilience, healing and rebuilding. Their testimonies served as a powerful reminder of both the human cost of hatred and the enduring strength of survivors.
The vigil concluded with an interactive exchange centred on the ongoing quest for justice and the continued fight against genocide denial and hate speech, reaffirming the responsibility of all generations to preserve memory and safeguard truth.
