Rwanda Participates in WTO General Council Meeting in Geneva
Rwanda participated in the meeting of the General Council of the World Trade Organization held on 6–7 May 2026 in Geneva, where Members exchanged on key priorities related to the multilateral trading system and the follow-up to the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference (#MC14) held in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
In Rwanda’s national statement, Ambassador Urujeni Bakuramutsa congratulated Ambassador Clare Kelly of New Zealand on assuming the Chairmanship of the General Council and expressed Rwanda’s support for the Chair’s transparent and Member-driven approach to guiding the Council’s work.
Rwanda emphasized the importance of sustaining momentum on development priorities, including issues related to least developed countries (LDCs), WTO reform, electronic commerce, fisheries subsidies and agriculture, in a balanced and inclusive manner.
The statement also supported strengthened cooperation between the WTO and the African Union, including the request for observer status for the African Union in the WTO General Council and other relevant bodies, highlighting the importance of aligning multilateral trade efforts with Africa’s regional integration agenda.
