Rwanda and Slovenia Explore New Opportunities for Economic and Development Cooperation
Rwanda and Slovenia are exploring new opportunities to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, innovation and sustainable development, following a series of engagements held in Ljubljana and in Bled by Ambassador Urujeni Bakuramutsa, while participating at the 15th edition of Africa Day.
In Ljubljana, Ambassador Bakuramutsa presented Copies of Letters of Credence to Ambassador Nataša Prah, Head of Diplomatic Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia. Discussions highlighted the growing partnership between the two countries and Slovenia's commitment to expanding cooperation with Rwanda in political, economic, environmental and cultural fields.
The presentation of Copies of Letters of Credence coincided with the 15th Africa Day Conference, co-organized by the International Center for Promotion of Enterprises (ICPE), and the Ministry, under the theme of strengthening Africa–Slovenia cooperation and economic partnerships. Addressing a panel on African economies, Ambassador Bakuramutsa showcased Rwanda's economic transformation and highlighted the country's position as a gateway for investment, innovation and trade, emphasizing growth, stability and execution as key drivers of development.
On the margins of the conference, Ambassador Bakuramutsa also held discussions with Slovenian government officials, development partners, private sector representatives and business leaders to follow up on engagements initiated during the Slovenian business delegation's visit to Rwanda in 2025. The exchanges explored opportunities for cooperation in water resource management, disaster risk reduction and early warning systems, biotechnology, robotics, digital financial solutions, affordable housing and youth-focused development initiatives.
Ambassador Bakuramutsa met with Jana Grilc, Deputy Director-General for Economic Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovenia; Mag. Dušan Pšeničnik of the Directorate for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid and Policies; Matjaž Ivačič, Managing Director of GeoCodis Information Systems; Dr. Štefan Simončič, President of EPEKA; and Matej Rogelj, Deputy Director of the International Relations Department at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia.
Rwanda also participated in the Bled Water Forum, held in the town of Bled, internationally recognized for its commitment to water management and surrounded by one of Slovenia's most iconic lakes. Discussions focused on the climate–water nexus, water resilience and the importance of international cooperation in addressing shared environmental and development challenges.
Rwanda and Slovenia welcomed progress toward the conclusion of a Memorandum of Understanding on Economic Cooperation and discussed additional frameworks to facilitate trade, investment and business exchanges. Reflecting the positive trajectory of bilateral relations, Rwanda was also proposed as the focal country for the 16th edition of Africa Day in 2027.
