Kwibohora31: Celebrating Rwanda’s Liberation Day in Geneva
On 4th of July 2025, the Embassy of Rwanda to Switzerland and Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office at Geneva hosted a solemn reception in Geneva to mark the 31st Anniversary of Rwanda’s Liberation Day – Kwibohora31. The evening brought together members of the Diplomatic
Corps, UN officials, the Rwandan community, and friends of Rwanda in a celebration of resilience and national renewal.
In her keynote address, Ambassador Urujeni Bakuramutsa paid tribute to the Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA), whose sacrifice brought Rwanda’s liberation in 1994 and paved the way for the country’s rebirth. She highlighted Rwanda’s remarkable journey of unity and progress since then, and reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to constructive engagement in global cooperation and multilateralism.
The celebration featured a powerful rendition of the Rwandan national anthem and a vibrant performance by acclaimed Rwandan vocalist Christiane Boukuru, joined by the Urumuri Music Band. Their musical tribute, blending Rwandan, Pan-African, and international classics, added a lively spirit to the occasion. Guests shared moments of reflection and celebration, honouring Rwanda’s past while looking forward to its continued transformation.
Rwanda’s Liberation journey is a powerful reminder of the nation’s resilience, unity, and progress. For the younger generation, celebrating Kwibohora is not only about honouring the past but also about embracing the responsibility of safeguarding Rwanda’s future and carrying forward the values that define its national identity.
