In Vienna, Rwanda Participates in International Conference on Remembrance, Reconciliation and Reintegration – the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda
On 23 March 2026 in Vienna, Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Olivier Nduhungirehe, participated in the international conference titled “Learning from the Past, Shaping the Future: Remembrance, Reconciliation and Reintegration – the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda,” held at the Vienna School of International Studies.
In his remarks, the Minister underscored the urgency of addressing genocide ideology, denial, and distortion in an evolving global context, including through digital platforms, and called for strengthened international cooperation, education, and accountability to prevent mass violence.
Organized by the Austrian Service Abroad, in partnership with the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs and the Vienna School of International Studies, the conference brought together policymakers, experts, and practitioners to exchange perspectives on remembrance and post-conflict recovery.
Rwandan experts contributed prominently to the discussions, including Frank Kayitare (Interpeace), Chantal Ingabire (Community Based Sociotherapy), Odette Mukansoro (Dignity in Detention), Freddy Mutanguha (Aegis Trust/Kigali Genocide Memorial), and Ariane Inkesha (International Alert), who shared insights on reintegration, reconciliation, and community-based approaches to healing.
Ambassador Urujeni Bakuramutsa delivered the closing remarks, emphasizing that addressing genocide and mass violence requires a comprehensive approach combining history, justice, remembrance, and education, while noting that lasting impact is achieved at the community level through sustained reconciliation and reintegration efforts.
The conference concluded with a renewed call for collective action to strengthen remembrance, counter genocide ideology, and ensure that “Never Again” is upheld in practice.
