Rwandans in Switzerland celebrate National Liberation Day

The Embassy of Rwanda to Switzerland and Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office in Geneva hosted a reception to mark the 29th Anniversary of Liberation Day on 4th July 2023 under the theme ‘’Together We Prosper’’.

Kwibohora29 celebration in Switzerland was hosted in the City of Geneva and brought together the Rwandan Community in Switzerland, Members of the diplomatic corps in Geneva and Friends of Rwanda.

Delivering the keynote address, Ambassador Marie Chantal Rwakazina, Rwanda’s envoy to Switzerland expressed her appreciation to hundreds of guests who attended the reception for their solidarity and friendship.

Ambassador Rwakazina elaborated the rationale behind the theme of Kwibohora29: ‘’Together We Prosper’’.

“Through this theme, we are committedly reaffirming our strong determination to build a unified country in which the people of Rwanda work resiliently to achieve national development goals and subsequent self-reliance, while fostering leadership and individual accountability at all levels. The liberated Rwanda of today is a dream come true in our lifetime.”

Envoy Rwakazina also shared Rwanda’s transformational journey, and key achievements in various sectors over the last 29 years, rising from the atrocities of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, and commended the courage, resilience and the spirit of patriotism of the Rwanda Patriotic Front.

‘’By liberating the country on July 4, 1994, the Rwandan Patriotic Front led by H.E. Paul KAGAME, President of the Republic of Rwanda defeated the genocidal forces, a heroic victory that ended the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, in which more than a million innocent people were killed for the sole reason of being Tutsi’’. Ambassador Rwakazina said.

Ambassador Rwakazina further reaffirmed Rwanda’s steadfast commitment to working continuously and closely with other Member States both bilaterally and multilaterally with a view of finding innovative and sustainable solutions to the most contemporary global issues such as preparedness for and response to health emergencies, the broken global migration system, conflicts and insecurity situations, and climate change, and sharing innovative development initiatives through South-South and triangular cooperation.

Urunana, a Rwandan cultural dance troop based in Switzerland spiced up the 29th Anniversary of National Liberation in Geneva.
