Rwandans in Switzerland celebrate National Heroes Day

Rwandans in Switzerland gathered in Geneva on Friday 7th of January 2025, for a celebration marking National Heroes Day, a moment dedicated to honouring the bravery, patriotism, and sacrifice of Rwanda’s National Heroes. Organized by the Embassy of Rwanda in collaboration with the Rwandan diaspora community in Switzerland, the gathering highlighted the values that have shaped Rwanda’s history and continue to guide its future.

In his address, Ambassador James Ngango spoke about the impact of Rwanda’s heroes, emphasizing their lasting impact to national unity and progress. "Our heroes embody the highest values of sacrifice, unity, and patriotism as their bravery continue to guide and inspire the next generation, to uphold unity and resilience as pillars of Rwanda’s progress." he stated.

A panel discussion, titled "Exploring the fundamentals  of Heroism and Unity in Rwanda’s Development," was held, highlighting how the heroes continue to inspire generations to uphold unity and contribute to the Country’s transformation agenda. Members of the diaspora community shared insights on how these values remain relevant in shaping Rwanda’s future.

The event also featured traditional dance, music, and shared meals, providing an opportunity to celebrate Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage, while reflecting on the community’s collective aspirations for the future. A performance by Urunana, a Rwandan cultural group based in Switzerland, added an engaging cultural dimension to the event.

A recap to young people recalled Rwanda’s National Heroes classification into three categories: Imanzi, Imena, and Ingenzi. The Imanzi category celebrates supreme heroes whose sacrifice and achievements had an unparalleled impact on the nation. The Imena category honors individuals recognized for extraordinary acts of bravery and service, while the Ingenzi category acknowledges those distinguished by their exceptional contributions to Rwanda’s progress.
