Rwanda Participates in the High-Level Discussion Marking the Human Rights Council’s 20th Anniversary
Rwanda participated in the high-level discussion held on 19 June 2026 to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Human Rights Council during its 62nd session (#HRC62).
In her intervention during the discussion, Ambassador Urujeni Bakuramutsa emphasized the importance of strengthening the Council’s preventive role through greater support for national and regional human rights institutions, and by promoting locally grounded, victim-centred solutions capable of sustaining peace. She highlighted that, particularly in Africa, progress in human rights is closely linked to resilience, institution-building, reconciliation and conflict prevention.
The Ambassador also stressed that preserving the Council’s credibility and effectiveness requires stronger dialogue, including inter-regional exchanges, while avoiding selectivity and politicisation.
The discussion brought together senior stakeholders to reflect on the Council’s achievements over the past two decades and to exchange views on its future role in promoting and protecting human rights worldwide.
