Innsbruck City Council Approves Initiative to Install Commemorative Stele Honouring Victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi

In Innsbruck, Ambassador Urujeni Bakuramutsa met with Mayor Johannes Anzengruber following the City Council’s decision to approve the installation of a commemorative stele in honour of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

The Ambassador expressed appreciation for this important step, noting that it reflects the city’s commitment to remembrance, human dignity, and the universal values of peace and solidarity. Both sides underscored the importance of such initiatives in preserving memory and promoting education for future generations.

Discussions also explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation between Rwanda and the City of Innsbruck, particularly in tourism, cultural exchange, and knowledge-sharing. The exchange highlighted Innsbruck’s experience in promoting historical and cultural heritage, alongside Rwanda’s growing tourism sector and interest in developing sustainable and mountain tourism partnerships.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to maintain close engagement and pursue practical follow-up on the commemorative project, as well as broader areas of cooperation.
