Commemorative Mass Held in Fribourg in Memory of Victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda

Members of the Rwandan community in Switzerland, and friends of Rwanda gathered in Fribourg on 30 May 2026 for a Commemorative Mass in memory of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Bishop Pierre Farine, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Fribourg, and Bishop Jean-Bosco Ntagungira of the Diocese of Butare in Rwanda, in the presence of Rwandan priests. The Mass provided an opportunity for prayer, reflection and remembrance, while honoring the memory of the more than one million innocent lives lost during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

Addressing participants, Ambassador Urujeni Bakuramutsa expressed gratitude to the organizers, the Rwandan community and Ibuka for their continued commitment to preserving memory and supporting survivors.

The Ambassador called for continued efforts to preserve memory, support survivors, promote unity and strengthen the collective responsibility to stand against hatred, division and genocide ideology. She also encouraged the continuation of this annual Commemorative Mass so that future generations may continue to remember, reflect and responsibly transmit the history and lessons of the Genocide against the Tutsi.

The ceremony concluded with a renewed call to preserve memory, support survivors, promote unity and remain vigilant against hatred, division and genocide ideology.
