Short background story

Rwanda and Austria enjoy good relations underpinned by the strict mutual respect, especially with regards to the principle of non-interference in other partner’s internal affairs. Austria promotes dialogue and trust between states, cultures and religions, aimed at advocating effectively for a global order that respects international law and human rights.

In anticipation to the Africa-EU Forum organised under the Austria EU Presidency in December 2018, Chancellor Kurz visited Rwanda on 7 December 2018 as part of a  regional visit aimed at harmonizing views between both Co-Chairs (AU-EU) and strengthening bilateral ties as well as regional peace and security matters including the Sahel Region where Austria is engaged. The stated key objectives of Austrian Development Cooperation are to contribute to securing peace and human security, combating poverty as well as preserving the environment and protecting natural resources. Rwanda-Austria cooperation has been channelled via the Austria Development Cooperation Agency (ADA) and focused mainly on water sanitation, youth empowerment and employability as well as in the judicial sector. Rwanda was a priority country under Austria’s cooperation in early 80s but was lost in early 90s. It may be recovered with some bilateral engagements and diplomatic exchanges. For instance, the last visit to Rwanda of a high-ranking official from Austria was held by Hon Hans Winker, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in June 2008, when he was campaigning for his country’s support to the UNSC/NP seat.
