Rwanda Cooperation with UNOG

The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Rwanda to the United Nations Office and other International Organiyations in Geneva promotes the interests of Rwanda and works with other Member States to develop and advance International standards and rules in terms of trade, humanitarian affairs, human rights and health.

 

International Organisations

WTO; UNCTAD; UNIDO & ITC

The Mission’s Commercial Section advances Rwanda’s interests in the multilateral Organizations involved in international economic and trade related issues. These Organizations include, the World Trade Organization (WTO), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the International Trade Centre (ITC). In addition, the Commercial section is involved in attracting Foreign Direct Investment, tourism and exports promotion

International Telecommunication Union

Information and Communications Technology has been central to Rwanda’s economic growth and a central plank of our Vision 2050. Rwanda actively engages with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and has the pleasure of hosting both Connect Africa and Transform Africa and is home to the Smart Africa Secretariat.

International Labour Organization

Rwanda is active in the work of the International Labour Organisation and contributes to the improvement of labour relations, social justice, laws and policies consistent with regional and International labour standards that pave way to an environment suitable for business growth, creation of decent employment, poverty eradication and fight against violence and harassment at work, etc. Rwanda serves on the ILO Governing Body, in her capacity as deputy member for the term 2017-2020, and stands to upgrade this status to regular member by June 2020.

OHCHR; Human Rights Council and all its Mechanisms

Rwanda is committed to cooperating, promoting and protecting human rights within the United Nations system. In that regard, in 2011, Rwanda issued a standing invitation to all special procedures mandate holders and is fully up to date in its treaty body reporting obligations. Rwanda ratified the vast majority of core human rights treaties and was elected to the Human Rights Council in October 2016 for a three-year term, which strengthened her contribution in upholding high human rights standards. Rwanda participates actively and constructively in the work of the Human Rights Council and all its mechanisms and to ensuring that the Human Rights Council and its mechanisms can prevent violations of human rights globally through early warning that leads to early and effective response. In addition, Rwanda is committed to the Universal Periodic Review and submitted its second cycle UPR to the Human Rights Council in 2015 and has established a multi-stakeholder forum to follow up on the implementation of the recommendations of that review.

IOM; UNHCR; ICRC and OCHA

Humanitarian Affairs and MigrationRwanda is committed to international humanitarian cooperation and ensuring improved coordination of humanitarian assistance and upholding the fundamental humanitarian principles of neutrality and impartiality. The Mission is active in the work of the Geneva based humanitarian organisations and in strengthening compliance with international humanitarian law, refugee law and related protection issues. We work to improve responses to humanitarian and migration issues within the following international organisations; the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).Rwanda attaches great importance on peacekeeping and international security, it is currently the second largest contributor of troops in the UN with 6,546 members of the Defense Forces and the Police. Rwandan female police peacekeepers occupy the 1st position in numbers in the United Nations missions. Rwanda is at the forefront against human trafficking and especially the sale of African migrants as slaves in Libya. It offered shelter and transportation to thousands of the victims.

World Health Organization

Rwanda is committed to ensuring the highest possible standards of health for its citizens including through provision of universal health coverage and strengthened health systems to combat communicable and non-communicable diseases. Rwanda is active in the work of the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Global Fund and GAVI, andthe Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). The later set an ambitious treatment target in January 2017 to help end the AIDS epidemic. The target is that by 2020, 90 per cent of all people living with HIV will know their HIV status, 90 per cent of all people with diagnosed HIV infection will receive sustained antiretroviral (ARV) therapy and 90 per cent of all people receiving ARV therapy will have viral suppression. In Rwanda to date, 84% percent of all people living with HIV know their status; 98% of those who are diagnosed HIV positive are on sustained antiretroviral therapy (ART); and 90 % of those on ART have an undetectable viral load, currently reaching 84-98- 90 of the joint target.
